DELIVERS THE 2007 COMMENCMENT SPEECH
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE
ASHUBRN, VA. – June 2007 – Veloris A. (Sonny) Marshall III, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marshall Communications Corporation (MARSHALL), recently delivered the 2007 University of Louisville commencement speech at a ceremony held on Saturday, May 12, 2007. Mr. Marshall was also honored by the J. B. Speed School of Electrical Engineering Alumni Council as the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus. A reception was held to celebrate his achievements in Engineering on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the University of Louisville.
A native of Louisville, KY, Mr. Marshall was unexpectedly greeted upon his arrival by friends and family from his old neighborhood of “Smoke Town”. He arrived to a crowd who gave him a grand homecoming by holding signs which displayed their delight in his life long and career accomplishments – proud of a hometown boy who has made good on his achievements. The Commonwealth of Kentucky has named May 11, 2007 as “Veloris A. (Sonny) Marshall III Day.”
In his commencement speech, Sonny elaborated on how his upbringing and family encouragement helped make it possible for him, as his father used to say, “keep your eyes on the prize”. Sonny spoke of how his parents instilled in him and his brothers and sisters, the idea that “if we could dream it, we could do it.”; and adds “how I am blessed to be living the American Dream today”.
Mr. Marshall’s message to the 2007 graduates was encouraging the graduates to use their diplomas and what they have learned “as an opportunity, a commitment, an obligation to go forward and continue the life-long process of learning. The diploma you will receive today is just the beginning. That’s why we call it ‘Commencement!’ It will not guarantee you success. If you have a goal, or a dream, you must be persistent, remain determined with a laser-like focus on what you want. You must also have a plan to get there.” He adds “My Dad would say to us, whatever you do, be the best at it.” Before congratulating the 2007 graduates of the Speed School of Engineering, Mr. Marshall closed his speech by reading the poem entitled “INVICTUS” by William Earnest Henly.
Retired Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Marshall founded Marshall Communications Corporation in 1991 and is head of his own systems engineering and integration company. He firmly promotes and supports higher education in the engineering field. Mr. Marshall is an alumnus of the J. B. Speed School of Engineering and holds a BEE from the Class of 1970. He also received his MSEE from the Air Force Institute of Technology (Class of 1974). He was awarded the “2005 Professional Award in Engineering” and currently serves on the Board of the Speed School of Engineering at the University.
